Melbourne – Perth round trip

Well, it’s only taken five years, a global pandemic, and a detour around Tasmania — but we’re finally doing it. The ride to Perth.

Back in 2020, we had it all planned. Borders open, bags packed… then the WA government decided to play “Guess Who’s Not Coming to Dinner” and closed the border a week before we left. Cancelled. Just like that.

We made the best of it: Tasmania got the honour of being our substitute destination. Beautiful ride, but it wasn’t Perth. And Perth matters. Because this isn’t just another trip — this is our training run for the big one on the bucket list: Alaska to Patagonia. If we survive this, we’ll know whether we’re cut out for the marathon.

So here we are. Accommodation booked (mostly). Route locked in. Tango shoes and dresses packed (you don’t cross a continent just to miss the Perth milongas). On 13 September 2025, we roll out.

7,603 km of blissful riding — plus a few detours, tyre repairs, and probably some colourful language. I’ve already started counting the minutes… though the bike seems suspiciously quiet about it.
